A cutter suction dredger is a continuous-operation dredger. Its core feature is a massive, rotating cutter head mounted underwater at the bow. The rotating cutter cutters break up and loosen the mud, sand, and rock on the bottom of the water. Then, using the vacuum created by the ship's powerful dredge pump, the chopped mixture (mud) is sucked up through a suction pipe and then transported through a discharge pipe to a designated area several kilometers or even dozens of kilometers away.
Simply put, it's like a "water vacuum cleaner," but with the suction head replaced by a giant "meat grinder," breaking up hard objects before sucking them up.

Working Principle and Operational Process
Positioning and Lowering: The vessel is positioned at the construction site using anchor cables or steel piles. The cutter bridge is then lowered to the water surface, allowing the cutter head to contact the bottom surface to be excavated.
Crushing and Excavation: The cutter motor is activated, and the huge cutter begins to rotate at high speed, cutting and crushing the soil and rock on the bottom of the water.
Slurry Suction: Simultaneously, the vessel's dredge pump begins operating, generating powerful suction to draw the mud, loosened by the cutter and mixed with water, through the dredge suction pipe.
Transportation and Discharge: The dredge pump pressurizes the suctioned mud and transports it through the dredge discharge pipe system to a distant destination (such as a dumping area or a dredge fill area).
Lateral Movement: During the excavation process, the vessel, operated by anchor cables or steel piles, causes the cutter head to oscillate in a fan-shaped pattern on the bottom of the water, much like raking the ground, clearing a fan-shaped area.
Step-by-step progress: After one sector-shaped area is excavated, the ship uses the steel pile system to "take a step forward" and start excavating the next sector, and repeats this process until the entire operation area is completed.
